Ever feel a little weird around the edges? Or maybe you’ve come to terms with your quirky self as a grown up but that can be tough to do when you’re a kid. Especially these days when the compare/contrast game is at our fingertips all the time. Check out these nine pretty printable being different quotes to encourage your little people (okay, and you too) to celebrate the weird little things that make them them!
Weird is not an insult…
One of my favorite compliments to give my own kids is “You’re just the right amount of weird.”
Weird is what makes a person funny, original, and true to themselves. Who wouldn’t want that? I want to raise kids that think for themselves and are proud of the parts that make them different.
Being different doesn’t always feel good…
I’ve got a lot of weird going for me.
I am a hardcore introvert.
I measure almost six feet tall.
None of these qualities makes me your average bear and that’s okay. But I didn’t always feel that way. I think middle aged (which is where I am unless I live to be really, exceptionally old) brings with it a little bit of self acceptance which I’d like to think keeps increasing with age and wisdom.
Quotes about being unique inspire acceptance…
The things that make me weird and unique also make me…me.
I used to wish I didn’t notice so much. Life would be simpler, for sure. But I do notice (people, feelings, inconsistencies, nuances, you name it) and I like to think all that noticing makes me a more empathetic person. And it does for sure. But it also leads to a lot of painful overthinking that ultimately helps no one. A post for another day but also a really big part of who I am.
I have one million ideas all the time. Seems like a positive, right? Sometimes it is but I struggle to quiet my brain. (That’s why I blog!) My thought process spirals at about one one hundred miles an hour and then I fall asleep, no in between. It’s exhausting. I’m working on it.
My sense of humor errs on the dark, inappropriate side.
If I never entered another crowded room again I would be so, so thankful.
I sometimes struggle with knowing what to say. And then I say nothing or I say everything, It can be so hard to act normal.
It’s okay. That’s me. It’s who I am, I want to keep growing, changing, and learning about myself and the world around me, of course, but I’ll still be me, imperfections and all.
Weird = Real, Unique = Genuine
Some of my most favorite people in life are kinda’ weird and not always all that likable upon first meeting. They’re awkward and quirky and not at all smooth. But they are themselves through and through. I think that’s part of the reason I enjoy working with kids so much. They haven’t had time to polish off their rough edges. They call things like they see it, without an agenda.
Now the idea living a life built on your own uniqueness is not just about me. These days it also includes raising my four kids to embrace all their quirks and eccentricities. Viewing those “different” parts of your personality as strengths to be built upon instead of hurdles to overcome is a game changer.
I don’t want them to have a midlife epiphany to embrace their weirdness- let’s start today!
I hope these pretty being different quotes can inspire you and your little people to start living your most unique life today!
Ways to encourage kids to live their most unique life…
Pretty being different quotes are a great start. Hopefully they serve as inspiration and a great reminder but they aren’t what will really make a difference in your kid feeling comfortable being true to themselves. Here are the things I see making a real difference at our house and the kids I work with.
Listen to your kids when they tell you all their weird ideas. Kids need someone to believe they can do the crazy stuff they dream of.
Do your own crazy stuff. Let your kids watch as you try new things way outside your everyday wheelhouse.
Allow room for mistakes. Failure isn’t the worst thing that can happen. Check out these growth mindset quotes if you’re into more pretty watercolor inspiration.
Engage in their interests. It can be so tempting to assume our kid’s interests will mirror our own. They won’t. Chances are good your kids will may be interested in things you didn’t even know you didn’t know about. Follow them into their interest and let them teach you. It’s good for you kid to be the leader and the teacher. Enjoy the switcheroo.
