Materials to make a DIY wooden picture frame….

This is a very economical and environmentally friendly craft because they come together with just a piece of wood and a photo.

If you want to add color to your DIY frame you’ll need paint, tempera or craft acrylic will work great.

The wooden frames we made in these pics were made with stretchy elastic like this colorful set of elastic. I like using elastic to make these frames because it makes it a cinch to switch out the photo in the frame!

If you don’t have any elastic there are other great options to make this same style of frame. Switch it up by using any of these materials…

Preparing for your DIY wooden photo frame….

Grab a few blocks of wood from your scrap pile. These frames could be just as beautiful with the natural wood grain showing through or add color with paint.

I suggest providing a limited palette of three colors or so and set your young artists free! Set aside to dry!

Choose a photo and trim to fit one of the blocks of wood. Add a piece of paper, patterned or plain, to act as photo mat. You can add a dot of glue to attach the photo and the mat or leave them unstuck so that it’s easier to swap out the photo anytime!

This paper mat could be a great place to add a splash of color or pattern especially if you choose not to use paint!

Layer photos or drawings on top of a scrap of wood to create a sweet DIY picture frame

Turn your wood block into a frame….

Start by stretching the elastic over the back of one side the block. Wrap one end of elastic to the front, at a forty five degree angle, and to the back. Do the same thing with the other side of elastic, overlapping with the first pice and the original stretch. Pin through all three layers with a thumb tack to secure.

There are may configurations of elastic or yarn that would create those forty five degree corners. the one described above just creates a neater backside to your DIY frame and allows for just two tacks to be used! Do what’s best for you!

Add your photo to your wooden frame….

Slide a photo or drawing by slipping one corner under each of the forty five degree corners. Wiggle until it’s centered and you’re done!

These DIY wooden frames will stand up on their own and are the sweetest DIY gift when filled with an original artwork or photo!
