Introduce your students to Keith Haring’s colorful pop art with these printable Keith Haring for kids resources.

Who is Keith Haring….

Keith Haring was born in the Midwestern United States to a conservative family. His dad was a cartoonist and inspired an early love of drawing and that cartoon style!

Haring left his small town to attend the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and then went on to the School of Visual Art in New York.

New York was especially inspiring to young Haring, with the subways and their graffiti being one of the most important inspirations of his career.

Keith Haring and graffiti art…

Haring was fascinated by the spray paint graffiti art of New York. While he admired the drawing techniques and line quality of these street artists he didn’t want to copy their work, but rather found his own unique style.

Soon Haring was using chalk to create drawings on black paper panels that were used to cover advertisements in the subway.

He created his own “tag” or signature that looked like a dog or sometimes a baby. People recognized his artwork and looked forward to seeing it.

Haring’s talent was recognized. His first show drew over 4,000 admirers and he was soon invited to show his artwork worldwide.

Learning about Keith Haring for kids…

Keith Haring’s work had a cartoon quality to it that made it especially relatable to kids. He used bright, often primary colors, and subjects like crawling babies, dancing people, dogs, and spaceships.

Keith always loved interacting with kids and working alongside them. He painted many murals for children’s hospitals and schools!
