Scandinavan inspired patterns…
I’m not going to lie. My inspiration for these pretty Christmas-y Scandinavian patterns didn’t come from a lofty design magazine but rather from a children’s book. (Imagine that!) Any book by Jan Brett will make you want to doodle your own Nordic pattern but more specifically “The Mitten.”
Read the Mitten with your kiddos and slow down to notice the beautiful patterns that can be seen. Ask your kids what they notice about the patterns on the pages. Both the colors and patterns are inspired by nature!
Below I’ve also included a sample image of Scandinavian stitching that might inspire your stocking or mitten pattern. Remember these patterns are just for inspiration! Don’t worry about copying stitch by stitch or mark by mark!
Making your own patterned stocking or mittens…
The stocking and mitten template above include a grid pattern in the border and the stocking/ mitten. Encourage your kiddos to imagine that each pattern is made up by squares if color. In the samples in the pics I chose to fill in each square with an “X” but coloring each square a solid color would gave the same general effect! Present both options and let your young artists decide how they would like to create their pattern!
