Why celebrate St. Patrick’s Day…

I have to admit growing up I associated St. Patrick’s Day only with parades and wearing green to keep from being pinched at school.  St. Patrick’s Day is actually a celebration of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland who is said to have converted many Irish to Christianity.

While the holiday is based on solid history many of the ways in which we celebrate, at least in the Midwestern United States, are simply for fun and without much historical significance.  If you want to find out more about the real story of St. Patrick check out St. Patrick’s Day by Gail Gibbons or Patrick: Patron Saint of Ireland by Tomie dePaola. Both are beautifully illustrated and will give your kiddos a bit of historical information to add to their playful celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.

How to make a Saint Patrick’s Day hat…

Four templates print in black and white and include a leprechaun hat, a four leaf clover crown, a rainbow crown, and a St. Patrick’s day crown.  All are sized to print on standard 8.5 x 11 paper, preferably card stock.  Card stock will allow each hat or headband to stand up and be a bit more sturdy!

Add color to your St. Patrick’s day hat using any media your little artists enjoy! Markers or crayons are an easy choice or you could even provide glitter glue or paint!

Make your St. Patrick’s Day hat template three dimensional…

The leprechaun hat as well as the other three St. Patrick’s Day hats are sized to print on 8.5 x 11 paper. Print flat and add color while your hats or headbands are flat.  Once your artists are done decorating their hats it’s time to add that extra piece onto the back to make the hat fit your little person’s head.

The PDF has all four hats and includes two of the extensions needed.  If you need additional extensions for the back of hats just measure using the two provided and cut. A quick measurement and a piece of tape or two will connect the sides of the hat and it will be ready to wear!
