I think middle aged (which is where I am unless I live to be really, exceptionally old) brings with it a little bit of self acceptance which I’d like to think keeps increasing with age and wisdom.

I used to wish I didn’t notice so much. Life would be simpler, for sure. But I do notice (people, feelings, inconsistencies, nuances, you name it) and I like to think all that noticing makes me a more empathetic person. And it does for sure. But it also leads to a lot of painful overthinking that ultimately helps no one. A post for another day but also a really big part of who I am.

I have one million ideas all the time. Seems like a positive, right? Sometimes it is but I struggle to quiet my brain. (That’s why I blog!) My thought process spirals at about one one hundred miles an hour and then I fall asleep, no in between. It’s exhausting. I’m working on it.

I sometimes struggle with knowing what to say. And then I say nothing or I say everything, It can be so hard to act normal.

It’s okay. That’s me. It’s who I am, I want to keep growing, changing, and learning about myself and the world around me, of course, but I’ll still be me, imperfections and all.

Some of my most favorite people in life are kinda’ weird and not always all that likable upon first meeting. They’re awkward and quirky and not at all smooth. But they are themselves through and through. I think that’s part of the reason I enjoy working with kids so much. They haven’t had time to polish off their rough edges. They call things like they see it, without an agenda.

Now the idea living a life built on your own uniqueness is not just about me. These days it also includes raising my four kids to embrace all their quirks and eccentricities. Viewing those “different” parts of your personality as strengths to be built upon instead of hurdles to overcome is a game changer.

I don’t want them to have a midlife epiphany to embrace their weirdness- let’s start today!

Ways to encourage kids to live their most unique life…

Hopefully they serve as inspiration and a great reminder but they aren’t what will really make a difference in your kid feeling comfortable being true to themselves. Here are the things I see making a real difference at our house and the kids I work with.

Listen to your kids when they tell you all their weird ideas. Kids need someone to believe they can do the crazy stuff they dream of.

Do your own crazy stuff. Let your kids watch as you try new things way outside your everyday wheelhouse.

Engage in their interests. It can be so tempting to assume our kid’s interests will mirror our own. They won’t. Chances are good your kids will may be interested in things you didn’t even know you didn’t know about. Follow them into their interest and let them teach you.
