These paper lacing Christmas ornaments are so fun to print, punch, and practice lacing.  They’re perfect for hanging on the Christmas tree or dangling in a windowsill!

What do you need to make paper lacing ornaments…

Download the template.  (Directions are below!)  It’s important to print the template on card stock.  Plain printer paper won’t have enough stiffness to allow for lacing. We used glitter card stock.  It went through my printer with no issue and is so pretty.  If you use card stock with a pattern or texture you may want to do a trial run of printing to make sure the printing is on the plain side. With my printer that means paper goes in design side down.  Plain card stock will also work great for this.

You’ll need a paper punch to make the holes.  Look for the standard 1/4 hole punch.  Some of the smaller, more decorative holes will be hard to get yarn through when lacing!

Choose yarn for lacing.  You won’t need an especially long piece of yarn so this is a great time to use up any scraps you have!  If your yarn is on the thick side you’ll also want invest in a plastic needle.  These plastic needles are super inexpensive and are good for lots of hand crafts!  Plus, using a needle feels special to kids!

If you’re working with very fine yarn that fits through the lacing holes easily you may not need the needle at all!

Get started with lacing ornaments….

Start by cutting the ornaments out and punching holes using a paper punch.  If the lines are on the back of the ornaments it’s not crucial that they are “just right.”  Use them as guide lines and enjoy!

Use reasonable length of yarn to get started.  About a yards worth, plus or minus a bit, is about right.  Too long of a yarn length makes it harder to pull the yarn back and forth through the hole. Pull from the back to the front.  Secure the yarn on the back of the lacing ornament with a piece of tape before moving on!

Lacing patterns….

Once the lacing is started set your kiddos free to create their own pattern.  The same shape ornament with holes in the same places could be laced differently each time it’s done.  There is no right answer.  Just encourage your kiddos to move from one hole to the next going up and down, from back to front and then front to back.  This is great fine motor skill practice!

End the yarn on the back and use another piece of tape to secure the tape on the back.  Loop an additional piece of yarn through a loop at the top to create a loop to hang the ornament from.
