Being a kid can be tough.  Heck, being a human can be tough.  Everyone needs a little encouragement that they’ve totally “got this” from time to time.  These positive affirmations for kids come in the form of printable notes (throw ’em in a lunchbox ) and a poster that remind your kids you know they can do it!

What does a growth mindset have to do with it….

A growth mindset assumes that basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work.  So, it’s not whether you’re intelligent or unintelligent.  It’s just a matter of not learning a specific skill yet, or practicing that skill enough.  A growth mindset assumes that eventually, with enough hard work you can do anything you can put your mind to!

How exciting is that??  Brains and talent are not the whole story,  just a tiny piece of the puzzle.  Hard work and perseverance are where the real opportunities hang out.

It’s the simple things…

Pschyologist Carol Dweck’s book Mindset; The New Pschyology of Success was the origin of this whole growth mindset phenomena.  It’s described as “simple but groundbreaking.”  Isn’t that true about most really great things?  It’s the simple things that hold the most possibility.  Simple can be life changing.  Whether it’s sports, school, work, or hobbies the possibilities are endless.

I do not mean to say that having a growth mindset is as simple as having a positive outlook.  They are not one and the same.  But using positive affirmations like the ones below are a good start to growing kids with that growth mindset!

We do what we think we can do….

If I am “bad” at math I’m likely to shy away from challenges involving math.  That might mean not taking a difficult math class in college or eliminating the possibility of a math oriented career.  (In my case it would mean deferring helping my sophomore aged son with his algebra 2.  Because…math.)

But if I’m not necessarily “bad’ at math I just haven’t learned certain concepts yet that is a whole different ball game.  I may not know it yet, but I’ll get it.

Check out this list of children’s books to help encourage a growth mindset.

Our kids need affirmation from us, as parents and teachers, that we DO believe in them.  Knowing that someone else sees potential and believes they can do the math, make the team, or achieve any crazy dream can be a game changer for a kid!

You’re not that special….

This is something I tell my kids often.

“You’re not that special.”

It is most definitely something they will remember out of context as an adult and talk about around the holiday table.  I do not mean to say they are not amazing and unique but to say they are human.  Human beings have some things in common.  We mess up, we make mistakes, we get knocked down.

Knowing that mistakes aren’t a sign of failure but of growth and change is freeing.

Successful people mess up.  Everyone fails.  Those things develop new skills and grit that will make a person successful!

Daily positive affirmations for kids…

Even though I told you about my “you’re not that special” speech above of course I think my kids are crazy special people.  I think they will move mountains someday should they choose to put their mind to it.

These little printable notes are meant to be just that, encouragement, a daily reminder.  When my kids were in school I used to tuck a tiny note into their lunch box.  Even though we’re at home these days I still try to tuck a written note in here and there.  Seeing things in writing is special.  I find little notes I have written my kids used as bookmarks or tucked away.  I know they needed that affirmation and those written notes are special.

These free printable affirmations for kids can be used in all kinds of ways to add a bit of encouragement to a young person’s day.  Print them on sticker paper and you’ve got pages of positive notes for kids.   (if you haven’t used this paper before it’s a kinda’ awesome way to create mass stickers!)

Cut them out, and use them as bookmarks or tuck them into a lunchbox. Wherever you put them these little positive affirmations for kids will feel like a mini pep talk!
