It all started with an innocent Pinterest board titled “Bunk Rooms.”  We were in the process of taking our unfinished basement and making it about 50% finished.  Thereby (good enough) for kid use.  We have a fairly large home and we use every square inch.  We love to entertain and host and our kids do the same.

The idea of a tiny corner of space devoted purely to extra beds seemed genius to me.  The bunk room is in the basement so it is as far away from my littles bedroom upstairs as possible, helpful for letting them get their sleep.  There are no beds to be deflated, rolled up, rolled under, or shoved out of sight.

And maybe best of all was it is such fun.  Anytime we can invest a little money and a lot of elbow grease and the payout is years of fun memories for our kids I am in.  Cousins, friends, even sibling sleepovers are a little more special when everyone has their own spot.

A little nook just for them to have sleepovers~ magical.

Our first lucky break was that we have a storage space in the basement just the length of twin xl mattresses.  At least it is exactly that size after being expertly framed.  Each bed stretches from one end of the tiny room to the other, with no space to spare.

He even made this board little table that stretches across the beds so our littles would have a place for their drinks and for card games.  It is also super handy for any tall, uncoordinated people that may be making the top bunk.

The wall mount TV is another special treat.  None of our kids have a television in their bedrooms so they think it is quite the treat to be tucked in bed and watch a movie!

The ladder spans the distance between the two beds and can be used from either side.  Sometimes it’s used to hold extra bedding or the best of the stuffed animal collections!

Big Ticket Purchases For Our Bunk Room

Each side has two bunks with space for a third down low.   Since our flooring in this space isn’t permanent yet we have an air mattress on the bottom level.

This space also houses four of these Big Joe bean bags! They are gigantic!  These bean bags are a kid favorite for Xbox, sleeping, movie night, etc.  The kids drag them all over the house.  But it is nice to have a place to stash them when they are not in use.  My kids pick these over the couch any day!  We purchased them in Limo Black so they blend in with our other furniture and are just generally less obnoxious.

When August (college dorm time) rolled around I scoured the clearance section in search of Twin XL bedding on the cheap!  Our only big purchase for the room was mattresses.

After much debate we purchased four Lucid 5″ Gel Memory Foam Dual-Layered Mattress, Twin X-Large  They showed up rolled up like a sleeping bag, so small there was no way they could be comfortable.  After a few hours they puff right up.  My kids and I are highly sensitive to chemical smells and these mattresses didn’t bother us at all, even with four of them in a tiny room!  After a year of being used (even by the occasional adult) I think we made a great decision.  In fact we just ordered another one for a loft bed we built for number four.

For all intents and purposes the room is done.  Someday when there aren’t so many Skylanders on the ladder  I may decorate. For now it’s a space that belongs just to the kids and they do a fine job of making it their own!
