My memories of middle school and high school basically subsist of trying not to draw attention to myself. While I was figuring out what was going on around me my go to strategy was to fly under the radar. Who wants to be different? (It wasn’t me.)
I think that’s somewhat of a universal experience for kids as they mature. Everyone wants to fit in somewhere. That’s why I set out to find some books about homeschoolers as main characters that would be appropriate for older kids; specifically middle school and high schoolers.
I have not read every book on this list in its entirety. Take my recommendations with a grain of salt and check them out for yourself! I know my library hold list will be hopping with these titles!
Homeschoolers can relate to books about homeschoolers!
The choice to be a homeschooler is becoming a mainstream choice more and more. As kids get older they can pretty much create their own educational path that doesn’t necessarily require spending eight hours in the same building everyday. No matter how comfortable your kid is in their own skin it’s always nice to feel connected. Reading books that reflect their own lifestyle can reaffirm that they aren’t the only ones living this crazy homeschool life.

Classic Books That Feature Homeschoolers for Middle School and High School
Once upon a time homeschooling was how everyone received their education. Learning at home wasn’t trendy or conservative, or weird. It was normal. The following books are classics.
While these books about homeschoolers may not examine the homeschool lifestyle of today it is interesting to know that less than 200 years ago school as we know it today didn’t exist!
Chronicles of Narnia, series by C. S. Lewis
The Giver, series by Lois Lowry
My Side of the Mountain, trilogy by Jean Craighead George
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss
Swallows and Amazons, series by Arthur Rasome
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Occasionally some of these books (especially the classics) are super cheap or even free on Amazon Kindle Unlimited. Try a month for free and start your unlimited reading!
